Camotes, Calabazas, Higos, Tejocotes!

I said that I would come up with something to blog about soon ... and so I did!

This past week I got "hired" to go work with one of the sisters from church. I was a bit surprised that she wanted me to help her. I mean, let's be for real, the people around here seem to think that Americans are very lazy. Apparently we do not know how to work and our money DOES grow on trees.

Anyway, I said that I would go. And another surprise was that my dad actually let me go. I thought he would say "no" since he was the one who would have to drive me all the way across the city every morning.

So for four days I got to wake up at 3:30 a.m. to go work for fourteen hours everyday here:
La Central. It's a BIG market.

This is what we were selling.
Camotes (sweet potatoes), calabazas (pumpkin), higos (figs), and tejocotes (which I have no idea what those were, only that they tasted similar to peaches).

I learned the prices and how to weigh them on the scales and before I knew it I was able to stand there and sell all by myself with no help. I felt so proud. I mean, for a girl who's never had a "real" job it was good to know that I'm not as incompetent as I feel.

Carlos, my fellow camote seller. We worked together one day and I think him and I combined made a great team. We sold more together than his mother and I did any other day. I told him, "It must be our good looks!" LOL!

Sis. Susana selling some figs! If you have never tried candied figs ... YOU MUST!
I fell in love with them! I even bought half a kilo of the things. What a shame that I only have two left though.

We were working right next to a taco shop (that some people from our church own).
I was sitting right next to this smelly meat the whole time. Whew! Really makes your clothes stink!

And look who was working at the taco shop!
Abner from Puebla!
(I was like, "Can I take your picture to put on my blog?" ... I mean, he's famous, right?! Hahaha!)

Here's a few pictures of what I was staring at all day while working.

NASTY CHICKEN! This is exactly why I don't eat the stuff! I personally don't think it's as fresh as they claim that it is. And I witnessed them dropping the chickens on the ground while transporting them and then just picking them up and selling them. Now I understand WHY my mother washes her meat before cooking it!

Oh, this is just normal ...
A stack of birdcages with birds in them sitting right next to a vat of meat!
He. He. He. (I LOVE Mexico!)

And the picture that you have all been waiting for ...
Of course, by the time I thought to get a picture of myself there were no more customers and so I just had to pose. So no, I wasn't really just standing around the whole time. I really DID work.

I must say that this had to be one of the best experiences of my whole life. I had so much fun getting up at 3:30 a.m. and feeling like a zombie all day because I only got to sleep about four hours (when this girl is accustomed to eight hours of sleep)!

It's rather sad that I cannot work more often. But at the same time I am glad it is over because customers can be SO rude! And one man even went so far as to insult me because he realized that I wasn't from here. So he said (in a demeaning tone): "Gah, where's she from?"
I just smiled and acted like I didn't hear him. Of course, as soon as he turned his back I made sure to call him something appropriate!

Whew. It can be challenging to treat people Christ-like when they are making you dig camotes back out of the bag because they want a different size, or when they come around to check the scale because they think you are cheating them! Grr!

Anyway, that's enough complaining for now!
I wish everybody a blessed day and a happy week!

P.S. Sorry that the pictures are bad quality. But I didn't want to look like a dorky tourist by taking my camera.

Looks like you enjoyed yourself. Helped you to get out of the house and do something! How's Abner liking it?

I did have an extraordinary amount of fun! Everyone thought I was crazy for saying that I had fun, but when you are always just sitting in your house anything becomes fun! :D ... And I don't know if Abner likes it here or not since I don't really talk to him.
